About the Book (to jump straight to ordering copies scroll to the bottom)
In 1999 the then Dry Bones Youth Group in Bryson-Hesperia published Treasures Under the Oaks. It was a 128-page collection of recipes, history, annecdotes, photographs, and original art from the region the youth group reaches out to—the Bryson-Hesperia, Lockwood, Jolon, Pleyto, Lake San Antonio, Fort Hunter Liggett, and Bee Rock areas. This fundraising book was a wonderful success and helped the youth group reach out to local youth without cost being an issue for many years. People from all walks of life found it a fascinating “capture” of our area’s “flavor” . . . and it was read by many who have never read a cookbook in their life.
Out of print since 2000, the now True Life Youth Group has printed an expanded edition of this book called More Treasures Under the Oaks. As with the first book, all proceeds from donations for this book go to the youth group (True Life Christian Fellowship is a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization). This book includes the complete 1999 edition plus 96 new pages of history, photographs, and, of course, recipes—bringing it to 224 pages, spiral bound for easy laying flat open on a counter.
Containing all the recipes from the original edition, the expanded section of recipes in this new edition emphasizes something our area loves to do—cook and socialize outdoors. It has recipes (main courses, appetizers, and other) for the grill, barbecue, smoker, Dutch oven, and more, as well as tips and sides to go with an outdoor meal. This book even includes recipes and tips from multiple of our area’s famous and traditional fundraiser food events—Hesperia Hall’s Chicken Barbecue, Mission San Antonio’s Fiesta (chicken and top sirloin), St. Luke’s Barbecue (top sirloin), and multiple Dutch oven recipes from Nacitone’s annual Dutch Oven Dinner & Demonstration!
Includes such topics as: A “Bang” of a Fishin’ Trip!; Evicted at Gunpoint!; “Peg Leg” and the Grizzly; Bryson—A Place by the River; Wild, Wild, West!; Gold!; Fort Hunter Liggett’s Hidden Secret; A Different “Buried Treasure”; Dutch Ovens—A Pioneer Tradition Lives On!; The Chuck Wagon—An Outdoor Cooking Icon, and many, many more! Filled with photographs and anecdotes not found elsewhere. More Treasures Under the Oaks is truly a book that captures the "treasure" that is south Monterey County.
Proceeds: More Treasures Under the Oaks has been written and published solely to support the True Life Youth Group, our outreach youth group in our area. All proceeds from the book go to this. Your support and contributions will enable us to continue taking youth to Hume Lake Christian Camp each winter and to feed them dinner at our gatherings without money ever being an issue that would keep a youth from participating.
Suggested Donation: We are asking for a donation of $20 per copy for this book. If you choose to increase your donation, any amount above the requested $20 (the fair market value of the book) is tax deductible.
